The iconic White Beach Huts of Løkken

When summer arrives in Løkken, a truly special sight emerges in the white sand. Like pearls on a string, the iconic white beach huts stretch along the coast, forming a stunning contrast to the deep blue hues of the North Sea. Each year, they are taken down before the winter storms, only to return and mark the official arrival of summer as soon as their white facades once again light up against the dunes.

Learn more about Løkken

Løkken is one of the largest holiday destinations on the Northwest Coast. Beyond the wide, white beaches and iconic beach huts, this holiday town has plenty to offer—all of which you can read about right here.

The town of the small, white-painted beach huts

There was a time when fresh sea air was prescribed to the city bourgeoisie, and swimsuits were striped and reached below the knees.

Today, the wide, white sandy beach is a playground for children of all ages, and the characteristic huts remain the town's unmistakable landmark. The charming coastal town, nestled behind the lyme-grass-covered dunes, continues to be a favorite holiday and excursion spot for many. Løkken is old and young at the same time, hosting surfers, families with children, and retirees alike. In the old days, the town was a hub for the "skudehandel" (merchant trade) with Norway and a central trade artery between the inland and the coast.

The first residents were three men who settled at "Furreby Løkke"—hence the town's name—where they made a living selling beer and other goods. Ever since, Løkken has been known for its taverns and great places to eat—and Løkken remains a colorful and lively market town.

Fresh fish landed on the open beach

One of the highlights of the day in Løkken is when the fishing boats return from the sea and are hauled up onto the sand. It might be one of the five remaining fishing vessels coming in after jigging for cod in "The Deep" (Dybet). Løkken is—along with Nr. Vorupør, Lild, and Thorup Strand—one of the few places in Denmark where fish are still landed on an open beach. The fishermen sell their catch directly from the boat, and you can even sign up for a text message to know exactly when the boats are coming ashore. To be honest, you won't find fresher fish anywhere else.
